Tonight I noticed that in the 1851 census, six years before her marriage, Matilda was living at 72, Waterside as a 22 year old young woman with her brother, John Way Bulkeley, who was 27 and his daughter, Augusta Alexandria Bulkeley, born in Toxteth Park, Liverpool, who was just 7 years of age. John was working as a book-keeper at the time. There is no mention of his wife Celia McDonagh who he married on 17th June 1843 in Holy Trinity Church, Liverpool.
At some point over the next ten years, John married an Ayr lass, Grace Alice Bulkeley and they had many children together, with John now being the cashier at the Ironworks. By 1881, John was back in Toxteth with his children but by this time,it is possible that Grace is dead.
Why did John move to Dalmellington? Had his wife died and he made a fresh start with his sister? John travelled back to Toxteth and died there at Cedar Grange, Lodge Lane, at the age of 58 on 3rd April 1882. He left a personal estate of £560. More to find out!
