I showed my dad this photo and he drew a blank. I was so disappointed! Finally a flash of inspiration came to him - "That's Mrs. Wallace!" he said. However, he couldn't tell me if she was a relation. Anyway, I brought it home with me to scan in the hope that I'd be able to do a bit of detective work.
As I was researching the Govans family yesterday, I suddenly found out that Helen (Ellen) Govans was married to Thomas Wallace - BINGO!
Turns out, the lady in black is my great Aunt (Helen) Ellen, my great grandmother Grace Galloway's sister. She and Thomas had six daughters! Do you think that might explain all the girls in the photo? Also, I knew their eldest daughter, Mary (Mal) McNeill, very well and visited her regularly right up until I was around eighteen. Mal lived in Hurlford with her daughters Nessie and Ella. She had a son Norrie who played centre half for Ayr Utd. Football Club. Amazingly, she lived until she was 104.
One little snippet of information from my dad unlocked the whole story - magic!
