Portland Row, Hurlford c.1932
I have discovered many wonder photographs of my family but this, by far, is my favourite. It was taken around 1932 at Portland Row, Hurlford and my dad, Robert Ballantyne, is the little boy in the front row, 8th from the left.
Many of my relations were brought up in these miners' cottages - names such as Galloway, Ballantyne, Govans, Bryson and Wallace- all cousins, lived in this close community.
Behind the houses was the Portland Ironworks where many of the men worked. When the houses were demolished, many of the families moved to the new council houses in Blair Avenue.
